Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Association of Journalists. BAJ is the main independent organization of journalists, which has been protecting the rights and freedoms of the media since Alexander Lukashenko came to power.
BAJ lawyers have won hundreds of lawsuits, thousands of cases of assistance and protection of colleagues. BAJ is also the organizer and participant of numerous educational programs, international conferences and projects.
In 2020, the Belarusian society and the Belarusian media came under unprecedented repression by the Lukashenka regime. More than 600 cases of detention of colleagues, more than 80 cases of violence against journalists was recorded within 1.5 years after the 2020 elections. At the moment, more than 20 media representatives in Belarus are behind bars.
Despite harsh repressions against the Association itself (after a series of searches conducted by law enforcement officials in the office and apartments of BAJ leaders, the authorities deprived the organization of its legal status), BAJ continues to fight for the rights of colleagues, daily helping professional Belarusian journalists, and now also colleagues from Ukraine.
