On the evening of Thursday, 2 May, VUB and ULB will present their honorary title for freedom of expression to Marcela Turati, a Mexican freelance journalist who reports on the violation of human rights and the consequences of the Mexican drugs war. She writes for Proceso Magazine, a Mexican news magazine, and Nieman Reports, a quarterly publication about journalism published by Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation, among other outlets.
Turati also stands up for the interests of Mexican journalists. In 2007, she set up Periodistas de a pie (PdP), a Mexican organisation of journalists that offers training and networking opportunities and promotes the creation of high-value journalistic products.
She has won various international prizes, including the Excellence Award of the Ibero-American New Journalism Foundation, WOLA Human Rights Award, LASA Media Award and the Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism from Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation.
