Thomas Duprel, better known as Akro, is editorial chief of TARMAC, “the new playground” of French-speaking Belgian public service broadcaster RTBF. TARMAC is a platform around hip-hop and urban culture aimed at young people aged 15 to 25, an audience traditionally not always served all that well by public service media. It’s described as a “digital native” media initiative – social and digital media come first, before radio and television.

As Akro, Thomas made his name as a member of the well-known Belgian rap group Starflam, which rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He has also embarked on a solo career since 2006. Aside from editorial chief, rap artist and (music) video maker, Thomas has also supported campaigns for access to health care in Africa and in defence of woman’s rights.
