WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE SPEAKERS CORNER?
After London (Hyde Park) and some other cities around the world, Brussels will have its own Speakers Corner for at least one day, on May 3rd in BOZAR. A Speakers Corner, is traditionally where a speaker can publicly express his/her opinion freely on current affairs, politics, culture, philosophy etc., often while standing on a soapbox.
WHY SPEAKERS CORNER ON DIFFERENCE DAY 2019?
Freedom of speech is a vital element in our society, a human right. Despite the omni presence of media, the number of opportunities to freely express opinion are limited. When opinions are expressed, i.e. letters to the Editor or to the media, if published, they are often abbreviated. Without a famous name or celebrity status, your ability to be heard is reduced. Institutions of higher education have the vital task of educating young people to become empowered, engaged, responsible citizens with strong critical thinking skills. The initiative to have a Speakers Corner is a response to this.
The aim is that the Speakers Corner will provide a platform where citizens can openly and freely express their visions. There are few places where people can go to be heard.
The principles are “Speak Freely, Listen Respectfully, Different Opinions Matter” with regard to resistance and freedom of expression regarding topics such as diversity, ecology, and inequality.
Students are often concerned about the future of our society and, with the Difference Day 2019 and Speakers Corner, they will have the opportunity to actively voice their concerns directly to an audience
